The biggest and the best.
When I came to Cowwarr around 1972 the canteen at the football ground was a old miners cottage which was a tin shed with a wood stove in the back and would have bee lucky to be 2m X 2m and the menu consisted of hot dogs cooked in an old copper boiler and tea and sandwiches and a cake. Served in a proper cup and saucer.
Oh how things have changed over the years when the new change rooms were built in the late 70’s the ladies committee of the day moved into the old change rooms and now had a canteen 5 times the size with things like refrigeration and pie warmers and gas appliances.
In the eighties we saw big improvements in facilities at the club, when the social club rooms were built and then in the 90s we received a grant for the construction of a new canteen and gymnasium.
The canteen. Was the biggest in the league by far and I have to say one the best run. In 2018 the Recreation Reserve Committee of management was able to obtain a secondhand stainless steel kitchen for no cost from the old shire office building in Sale, this included 60+ meters of benches and shelving 2 double sinks a dishwasher and a glass washer along with a range hood and a couple of fridges.
This all had to be dismantled and carried back to Cowwarr and stored for when it might be used.
Craig Komahar, Steve Felmingham, Fred and Mich Even and Boyd Hegarty (Boyd supplied the transport with one of Hegarty’s removal vans) dismantled the kitchen and unpacked into Darren Websdale’s barn.
At the end of 2019 the committee after much deliberation on design and layout agreed to update the canteen to incorporate a full kitchen to facilitate the cooking of hot chips and other deep fried items.
These pictures show the timeline as the job progressed.
Once again the many people have helped in the completion of this project have been numerous special thanks go to Gals for organising the flooring, Shane Morgan for the stainless steel paneling and other things stainless, Peter Edebolghs for the electrical work plumbing by Nathan Farley and the general help by many of the player and members.
